About Tukwila, Washington

Racial diversity seems to be the name of the game for cities all around King County and Tukwila is absolutely no exception. About 17,000 people live in the city, grouped together as 3,952 families. Of those 17,000 people, 58.63% is non-Hispanic White, 12.79% is African-American, 13.6% is Hispanic, and 10.88 percent is Asian. Diversity of age is another quality that marks Tukwila; the percentage of population in every age group is nearly equal.

It's interesting to note that a significant minority of Tukwila is Native American. To express just how interesting that demographic is, let's quickly review what Native Americans went through when European strangers came to this country. After several thousand years of peaceful existence on the American continent, Native Americans watched in fear as Europeans stormed onto their shores carrying myriad deadly diseases, take away their land, and ultimately put an end to an entire culture overnight. With superior weaponry, European settlers took from Native Americans land and resources that had belonged to them for innumerable generations.

Europeans justified their actions by claiming a principle known as "Manifest Destiny" – a concept that "White men" had a destiny to establish the borders of a new nation. That pseudo-religious concept spurred the extermination of millions of Native Americans as colonials spread west, culminating in the "trail of tears".

Genocide notwithstanding, Native Americans find the culture and atmosphere of Tukwila sufficiently inviting that it allows them to overcome the centuries of discrimination and live with the descendants of the Europeans that brought a plague to Native Americans centuries before. Actually, the fact that Native Americans live in harmony in Tukwila with so many other races proves that mankind can learn that race and skin color can't fully alienate one human from another, despite all of the imaginary walls that have been built up over the years.
