The Bible and Bankruptcy
The heart and soul of the American legal system starts with the Bible.
"Thou shall not kill"; "Thou shall not steal"; "Honor thy mother and
father"; etc.  This is very much true with American Bankruptcy laws.

Bankruptcy provides for the "forgiveness" of debt. The Bible also has
debt forgiveness laws:

"At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release of debts.
And this is the form of the release: Every creditor who has lent
anything to his neighbor shall release it; he shall not require it of his
neighbor or his brother, because it is called the LORD's release"
(Deuteronomy 15:1-2).

The Bible refers to debt as a type of bondage: "...the borrower is a
slave to the lender" (Proverbs 22:7). Thus, the debtor is a slave to the
creditor. Interestingly, the Bible declares, at the end of the sixth year:

"...in the seventh year you shall let [your Hebrew slave] go free from
you. And when you send him away free from you, you shall not let him
go away empty-handed; but you shall supply him liberally from your
flock..." (Deuteronomy 15:12-14).

Our founding fathers, rebelling from the English system of Debtor's
Prisons, ensured that we could get a fresh start from our debt.  When
drafting the U.S. Constitution, they instructed congress to make
bankruptcy laws. These laws enable people to reboot their finances
and start anew without being further in "bondage". With the exception
of student loans (write your congressmen and sentators about this
one) and a few other types of debt, debt is eliminated as long as you
are an honest person who has just fallen on hard times.

Another benefit that our bankruptcy law provides, like their biblical
counter parts, are provisions for you to keep property sufficient to
start again.  Within limits, you can keep your home, cars, clothing,
furniture, and family keepsakes.

The New Testiment also speaks to debt forgivness: "forgive us our
debts [sins] as we forgive our debtors [those who sin against us]"
(Matthew 6:12, Luke 11:4).

If you need help, do not let your creditors keep you in bondage and
tied up in wrongful guilt.  Ask for the help.
