About Puyallup, Washington

Puyallup means "the generous people" and was named for the Puyallup Tribe of Native Americans, who lived in the Puyallup Valley before European settlers claimed the land in the mid-1800s. The city has a population of 37,022 according to the 2000 census with an estimated 2012 population of 37,620. Throughout the years, Puyallup has experienced a number of population explosions, the greatest of which occurred between the years of 1980 and 1990. In that decade, more than 5,000 people moved to the area and began to call Puyallup their home.

The city of Puyallup has a total land area of approximately 12.2 square miles, with .1 square miles covered in water. Located in Pierce County, Puyallup has one of the largest school districts in the region. To date, the Puyallup school district is made up of over 30 schools and 20,000 students and extends to neighboring cities such as South Hill and Tacoma. There is also a community college – Pierce College Puyallup – that opened in 1990.

One of Puyallup's most interesting features is the annual Puyallup Fair, which is the largest annual Fair in the region and one of the largest Fairs throughout the entire state of Washington. Puyallup also hosts an annual Spring Fair the draws tourists from around the country. In 1995, the city also became home to an outdoor gallery known as the Arts Downtown Outdoor Gallery. The collection includes more than 30 permanent exhibits with new work being added on a regular basis.

Though not home to any large aerospace or high-technology companies like some of its neighboring cities, Puyallup enjoys a relatively stable local economy, in part because of the revenue generated during its two annual fairs. In fact, a number of unique local businesses rely on the Puyallup and Spring fairs to survive.
