About Milton, Washington

Milton is a small city in Pierce and King Counties with a population of just 6,968. Though small, Milton is close to a number of large employment centers and recreational parks. Many people living in Milton commute to Tacoma and Seattle for employment and travel to neighboring cities such as Puyallup for recreation. Though the average household income in Milton is lower than similar-sized cities in the area, the lower cost of living and laid-back atmosphere of the city seem to compensate for the lower average wages. For those looking for more substantial wages, there are a number of post-secondary schools and high-technology jobs within commuting distance of Milton.

It's important to note that Milton is bordered by the larger (and younger) city of Edgewood. Edgewood shares much of its history with Puyallup and has a population of just less than 10,000. The city offers a number of recreational activities for people living in nearby Milton. Something that a lot of people don't – and really can't – understand about cities like Milton, Edgewood, Puyallup, Sumner, and many others in the area is that these cities are very close to one another. Cities with incredibly small populations like Milton could be more readily understood to be neighborhoods of the same larger "city" of King and Pierce Counties.

If you imagine King County and Pierce County as large cities, it's easier to understand how close in proximity cities like Milton, Puyallup, and others are to each other. Though Milton lacks the parks and attractions of a larger city, residents are able to take a drive to the nearest city and enjoy their amenities. The main reason each of these communities has been incorporated into individual cities is so that the residents can enjoy a higher level of representation. That's exactly why many of the unincorporated areas of King County continue to push for incorporation as cities.
