About Kent, Washington

As part of a statewide annexation project, Kent grew from 92,411 people to an estimated 120,916 in just over one year. That makes it the third largest city in King County and one of the top 10 largest in the state. Still, the city has a small town appeal that most large cities could never accomplish. That small town appeal is largely the result of the effort Kent residents have put into the Greater Kent Historical Society, which established a historical museum in 1996 to help promote the discovery, dissemination, and preservation of knowledge of the city.

You might be interested to know that Kent began as a major producer of hops in the 1880s after an aphid invasion in Europe. Kent later succumbed to the same aphid invasion. Fortunately, the area was able to generate income through dairy farming. Today, Kent is largely supported by large locally headquartered companies such as Boeing. Concerning recreation, Kent got its first sports team in 2009, though Kent residents have long supported Seattle sports teams.

Unlike Seattle and Tacoma, Kent has a mayor-council government. This is likely due to the fact that Mayor Suzanne Cooke is able to handle the day to day demands of a moderately large city as well as any city manager. Despite the minor difference in how the local government is organized, Kent functions and thrives nearly as well as its neighboring cities.

Of course, you're not going to learn everything about Kent without seeing it for yourself. This 28 square mile city has a lot more interesting qualities than its economy and geography. For more information about Kent, you can visit the city's official web site at www.kentwa.gov or for the full experience you can take a road trip and learn about Kent's many charms firsthand.
