About Fife, Washington

Fife is made up of 2,111 households, of which 32.4 percent were married couples. Though many households are made up of two or more working adults, the average annual household income is below the national average and a significant minority of the population is living below the poverty, including nearly 20% of those under the age of 18. Despite the somewhat weak economy, the city sustains a number of small businesses. The most notable local businesses are car dealerships, an Indian casino, and a number of highway side businesses. Because of its proximity to the port of Tacoma, the local economy in Fife also supports a number of freight forwarding businesses that take advantage of the freight coming into the area through Tacoma.

The local government in Fife has made many efforts to increase tax revenue by introducing various new taxes, including a tax on the number of doors a business uses. Fortunately for local businesses, the tax was turned down by the city council. Fife now focuses on revenue from prostitution stings. Still, the city government has suffered from the lower income levels of the city's residents. Nearby cities, even smaller cities such as Milton, enjoy relatively high income levels of more than $60,000 per year for households.

Fife is located just 10 or 15 feet above the water table in some parts, which means that the ground sometimes rises and falls during the day with the tide. The effect is only slight, though. Fife is surrounded by Federal Way to the north, Milton and Puyallup to the East, and Tacoma to the west. Since the city of Fife only has a total land area of 5.7 square miles and a population of less than 10,000, it's similar in size to many of its surrounding cities, though with a dramatically different demography.
