About Federal Way, Washington

Federal way is one of the most interesting cities in the Seattle Metropolitan Area. Aside from the fact that it's almost exclusively a company town, much like the failed towns of Central Pennsylvania, the city's economy is unique in that it isn't weakened by the fact that it relies on a few large companies rather than a diverse pool of manufacturing and service businesses. Its economy is only the tip of the iceberg, though. We're looking at a city here that has been around since before the turn of the 20th century but wasn't incorporated into a formal city until nearly 100 years after European settlers began using the land. Until 1990, the area known as Federal Way was simply a piece of unincorporated land upon which nearly a 90,000 people lived. Basically, it was a neighborhood of King County.

You don't want to hear about Federal Way's boring history, though. You might be interested to know about the wide variety of attractions in this mid-sized city. First on the list is steel lake park, which is located on 312th street. It has a large lakefront area where there are picnic areas and a playground. There's even a boat launch. Then, there's a celebration park. It has sports fields, wooded trails, and Independence Day fireworks are often held there. Another common attraction is Five Mile Lake. It's located on military road in the unincorporated area - on the west side of town.

In addition to the parks, locals can enjoy the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center, where there's a large swimming pool (which was actually used for the 1990 Goodwill Games) and a number of sports fields. Weyerhaeuser actually employs more than 2500 of the local residents of Federal Way. Weyerhaeuser also owns and maintains two botanical gardens for the public to enjoy, including the Rhododendron Species Foundation and the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection. Weyerhaeuser is, without a doubt, a very civic-minded company.
