About Des Moines, Washington

Des Moines is located about halfway between Seattle and Tacoma on the eastern shore of Puget Sound. The city is actually the one of the few points whose geographical features permits access to the water and, because of this, Des Moines owns and operates a fully functional marina complete with boat launching and pier fishing facilities. Though there's no solid evidence that there was ever a permanent Native American settlement in Des Moines, there is evidence that Muckleshoot and Duwamish Native American Tribes came to Des Moines often to go clamming and fishing.

6.3 square miles in area, Des Moines is largely known for its recreational activities. People living in nearby Seattle and Tacoma often visit Des Moines to spend some time on the nearly quarter mile sandy beach at Saltwater State Park or simply to get an unobstructed view of the Puget Sound. The town is also home to the Des Moines Beach Park, which was formerly known as Covenant Bible Beach C amp. The camp was originally constructed between the years 1917 and 1931 and is located on Cliff Ave and 220th Street. Contrary to what the name suggests, Des Moines Beach Park is not on a beach. The Des Moines Field House/Activity Center is also listed as a King County landmark.

Though the city has a fairly moderate population, Des Moines does not operate its own independent school district. Most of the neighborhoods in Des Moines make use of the Highline Public Schools District. The remaining two neighborhoods that aren't served by Highline Public Schools District, namely Redondo and Woodmont, are served by the Federal Way School District. Despite the fact that the city does not have its own school system, three secondary schools are located in Des Moines: Aviation High School, Mt. Rainier High School, and Pacific Middle School.
