About Tukwila, Washington

Like nearly every other city in the US, the cities surrounding Seattle, Washington are steeped in history. Tukwila, a small hamlet with a population of roughly 17,000 people, was little more than a village when the Duwamish Native Americans made their homes along the Duwamish River more than five thousand years ago. With the passage of time, Tukwila became an agricultural center and one of the busiest trading posts in the region. As the population grew, so did its economy. And, by the early 1900s, Tukwila became home to an early electric train which allowed those living in Tacoma to travel to Seattle in less than an hour.

History can teach us volumes about the character and stability of a city or nation. By examining the past, local governments can establish a broad plan for growth and development and avoid making the same mistakes as their forefathers made before them. If the growth and economic development that Tukwila has undergone thus far is any indication of the foresight and historical-mindedness of the men and women serving on the Tukwila city council, it appears that the men and women that serve Tukwila at present are, indeed, knowledgeable of the history of Tukwila.

It's sad to think that this small city, like so many before it, was robbed from Native Americans when European settlers came to America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Modern Anthropologists believe that Native Americans walked to America on the frozen ocean from Asia more than 10,000 years ago. That means that, after more than 10,000 years of peaceful - and environmentally friendly - existence, the entire culture of hundreds of Native American tribes came to an abrupt halt in a matter of a few years when Europeans arrived on their land.

It's all a matter of perspective, though. If it hadn't been for the disease and bloodshed of the 18th and 19th centuries, the United States of America - and all of the good it has done for the world - would never have come to exist.
