About Tacoma, Washington

Located about 32 miles southwest of Seattle, Tacoma, Washington is the county seat of Pierce County. Tacoma happens to be the third largest city in the state with a population of nearly 200,000 people. Known "city of destiny", Tacoma was chosen for the western terminus of the north Pacific railroad in the late 1800s. Since that time, Tacoma has grown to become Washington's largest port. Because of its status as an international port, and because of its proximity to Seattle, the local economy is among the strongest in the U.S.

Tacoma was born on November 12, 1875. Spurred by the decision to make Tacoma a terminus who railroad, the city grew rapidly but encountered a number of problems throughout the years that followed. At one point, Tacoma was nearly as bad as Compton, California in terms of crime rate. Today, Tacoma is one of the top 30 livable cities in the country. The radical improvement in community safety is credited to the diligent work of locals in community policing programs.

Tacoma's history is, for most, far less interesting than its culture. It has 12 "sister" cities: Kitakyushu, Japan; Gunsan, South Korea; Kiryat Motzkin, Israel; Aalesund, Norway; Vladivostok, Russia; Fuzhou, China; Davao City, Phillipines; George, South Africa; Cienfuegos, Cuba; Taichung, Taiwan; El Jadida, Morocco; and Biot, France. One of Tacoma’s distinguishing characteristics is its broad array of high quality educational institutions. Henry Foss High School is a perfect example of Tacoma’s emphasis on quality education; this school is one of the only high schools in the nation to offer an international baccalaureate program.

Despite its emphasis on education, Tacoma has a significantly lower per capita and household income than Seattle. The average household in Tacoma earns a little over $45,000 per year, compared to more than $60,000 per year per household in Seattle.
