About Fife, Washington

Fife, Washington is located in Pierce County and has a 2012 estimated population of 9,235. The city was incorporated in 1957, though European settlers had been living in the area since the beginning of the 19th century. Fife is largely home to businesses such as car dealerships, drive-thru smoke shops, and an Indian Casino. The city is located east of Tacoma and, because of its proximity to the Port of Tacoma, is home to a number of freight forwarding companies. An interesting feature of Fife geography is that, as the tide rises and falls throughout the day, so does the land.

Despite its proximity to Tacoma, the average household income in Fife is just $31,806 per year and the median per capita income is only $16,723. Nearly 15% of the population lives below the poverty level. The city is fairly racially diverse, with 68.62% of the population being non-Hispanic White, 6.8% African American, 6.5% Asian, 4.14% Native American, and 1.23% Pacific Islander. The rest of the population is made up of Hispanic and two or more races. The average family size is 3 people and there are 106 males to every 100 females in the city.

The city of Fife may have gotten its name from prominent attorney William J. Fife, who was once head of the Washington National Guard. He also served as a Lieutenant Colonel during the Philippine Insurrection. If it could be proved that the city was, indeed, named after William J. Fife, the city's school system would likely have named the city's only high school after the man. The Fife Public Schools system serves Fife and Milton, as well as parts of Federal Way and Edgewood. Fife has just one high school, aptly named Fife High School. A notable graduate of the Fife school system and Fife native, Dr. Mark Emmert, was formerly the President of the University of Washington and currently the president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
