About Federal Way, Washington

Located between Seattle and Tacoma, Federal Way is bordered by De Moines, Kent, and Milton. The population was 89,306 according to the 2010 census and the area of the city is approximately 21.1 square miles, with 0.1 square miles of that covered in water. Though its history spans back to before 1929, Federal Way was incorporated in 1990. It has a mayor-council type of Government and the current mayor is Skip Priest.

Probably the most interesting fact about Federal Way is that it is home to Weyerhaeuser, which is the largest private owner of softwood timberland in the world. The company has opened much of its land to the public, including two botanical gardens. It also employs more than 2500 city residents. Weyerhaeuser isn't the only attraction in the city. Federal Way is also home to Wild Waves Theme Park and The Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. Aside from Weyerhaeuser, employers such as World Vision, Saint Francis Hospital, Wal-Mart, And Wild Waves Theme Park employ a vast majority of the city's residents.

Federal Way is perhaps the most racially diverse city in the Seattle Metropolitan Area. 61.1% of the population is Caucasian, 8.7% is African American, 17.5% is Asian, and the remainder are classified as Hispanic and two or more races. As an American, you should already know the value of a diverse society. Suffice it to say the Federal Way's racial diversity lends a degree of solidarity to its culture that is hard to find in a lot of similarly sized cities.

Not surprisingly, Federal way appears to be growing. While some of that may be due to the annexation of unincorporated areas, other factors include: a strong local economy, favorable tax laws for businesses, and its proximity to Seattle.
